The London Health Observatory (LHO) and East Midlands Public Health Observatory, on behalf of the Public Health Observatories in England, have released updated health inequality indicators for all local authorities and primary care organisations in England. Figures for the slope index of inequality (SII) in life expectancy, for males and females, are now available for 2006-10.
The SII has been proposed as an indicator of inequality in the Public Health Outcomes Framework consultation and the figures provide a measure of the extent of inequality within local authorities and primary care organisations. The SII figures can also be used for comparing areas.
The latest SII figures are based on the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 (IMD 2010) and existing data from 2001-05 onwards have also been revised using these latest scores, so that comparable trend data are now available.
The SII figures are supported by a revised guide to interpretation, summary charts for each area, updated interactive maps and life expectancy figures for deprivation categories within each area. All these outputs can be accessed on the APHO website.
The LHO and North East Public Health Observatory have also produced summary IMD 2010 scores for 2010 electoral wards, Middle Layer Super Output Areas, and English regions. These have been calculated to be consistent with summary scores published by the Department for Communities and Local Government for local authorities, counties and primary care organisations. The summary scores can be found on the APHO website.
