NHS travel network
The benefits of an effective interface between travel and healthcare are increasingly recognised – there is a growing consensus that travel, climate change and public health are interlinked, and to deal with any of them, it is necessary to engage with them all. The London NHS Travel Network provides a valuable link for a range of stakeholders in the sustainable travel arena, including health organisations, local authorities, third sector and community organisations.
London has the greatest transport challenges of all regions and the NHS in London is also a key generator of travel across the capital (approximately 5 per cent of all trips). Bringing together the interests of health and transport providers in London should:
- Improve access to healthcare
- Ensure travel is considered at an early stage in service commissioning or reconfiguration
- Foster active lifestyles for Londoners
- Reduce the number of vehicle journeys and associated pollution and carbon emissions
The overarching objective of the network is to increase the sustainability of travel in the NHS in London, thereby reducing carbon emissions, improving health and improving travel related access to healthcare services.
