Case for change
During the summer of 2010, Commissioning Support for London asked a range of those involved in mental health care whether a pan-London review of mental health services was required and which aspects of the care pathway would most benefit from the introduction of a consistent model of care. The areas of work identified from the consultation were those which elicited the greatest level of interest and which had the greatest potential to have a positive impact on mental health services in London. As a result, the case for change concentrates on two areas:
- People in crisis
- People with long term mental health conditions
The case for change describes how services are currently organised for these two groups and highlights aspects of current provision that could be enhanced. It considers where there is scope to improve the quality of services (the experience of people using them, their safety and effectiveness), where innovative practice from some areas could be adopted elsewhere, where deterioration in some people’s mental health could be prevented and where the significant resources spent on mental health services could be used more productively.
