Commissioning

Following the Healthcare Commission Report on the performance of provider trusts (2008), we developed a systematic approach to the commissioning of maternity services based on the principles of world class commissioning. It aimed to improve access and choice for mothers as well as improve safety.

The project included improved local needs assessments, improved relationships with provider trusts and greater clarity at a local level for women on how to access maternity services and meet the 12 week indicator.

During 2007/08, we worked with practitioners to develop a core offer and outline service specification for London’s maternity services.

NHS London funded the project to continue to work with commissioners in 2008/09, in a series of seminars exploring key elements in the strategic commissioning process.
