Expectant mothers will receive more information, greater choice and better care thanks to a London-wide maternity services project.

The project aims to help primary care trusts reduce inequalities by ensuring safety, quality and access for all women, providing women with appropriate and safe places of birth and pain relief and meeting the needs of London’s unique population, now and in the future.

Healthcare for London, and later NHS Commissioning Support for London, worked with a wide range of experts from settings including midwifery services, hospitals and primary care trusts.

Particular focus has been given to improving the way services are organised across different sites especially in relation to supporting the midwife as a first point of access in the community and with consideration of impact on safety.

The maternity project is clinically-led with much involvement from members of the public and healthcare professionals.

Maternity Services in London: A Guide for Commissioners will be published shortly. Past publications can be found under publications.

The latest maternity profiles for London  were published in March 2012.  These give a comprehensive local maternity picture for each London borough.
