Life-saving plans are now in place following the introduction of a London-wide system for treating patients with major trauma injuries.
Healthcare for London set up trauma networks similar to those successful in other countries as a result of a London-wide consultation in early 2009. The networks ensure that all of the capital’s trauma patients receive excellent specialist care, increasing survival rates and shortening recovery times.
The heart of the networks are four major trauma centres now managed by the London Trauma Office (http://www.londontraumaoffice.nhs.uk/), where specialist teams provide treatment for major trauma injuries 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The centres are supported by a number of trauma centres located in A&E departments, which deal with less serious trauma injuries.
