Heart disease is the single biggest cause of death in London. Over the last ten years there has been a great improvement in cardiac services but more can be done to improve outcomes, increase the speed and equity of services and enhance patient experience.

The 2009-2011 cardiovascular project aimed to provide better services for the thousands of people in London undergoing either a percutaneous coronary intervention, electrophysiology intervention, cardiac surgery or complex vascular surgery.

This will be achieved by reducing delays for patients awaiting surgery, shortening the time they spend in hospital after surgery and improving their experience while there.

The London cardiovascular review ran from July 2009 to March 2011. The project was handed over to London commissioners to implement throughout 2011/12.
