Screening
In 2009, London was the only strategic health authority that did not reach the national target of 70% for breast screening coverage, with 20 out of 31 London PCTs performing below this threshold. London achieved the lowest coverage rate for cervical screening in 2008, with 28 out of 31 PCTs failing to reach the national target of 80% coverage. All of London’s 31 PCTs were below the initial national target of 60% for bowel cancer screening uptake in 2009.
In spring 2010, research was commissioned by NHS Commissioning Support for London to better understand the audiences who fail to respond to an invitation for breast, cervical and bowel cancer screening. It also identified the reasons for non response and initiatives that had increased uptake in other areas.
