Co-dependencies framework
There is currently no national clinical consensus on the services required to deliver and support specialised burns services for both adults and children. The co-dependencies framework seeks to establish a clear, clinically agreed statement of service co-locations and dependencies for specialised burns services.
In developing this tool, current standards, existing clinical evidence and reports were reviewed by the Burns Clinical Expert Panel. They were asked to consider the ‘ideal’ service configuration, independent of existing provider arrangements, financial limitations and service demand. When commissioning specialised burns services, factors such as epidemiology, access and geography must be considered. However, the panel was asked to ensure that these factors did not constrain the development of the ‘optimal arrangement’ for clinical care.
This tool is intended to provide support to commissioners in:
- Benchmarking current services
- Identifying further opportunities for improvement and
- Future service planning.
