11% of cigarettes smoked in London are illegal which means that they are either bootlegged, counterfeit or smuggled where tax has not been paid.
Illegal cigarettes provide a ready supply of cheap fags to the market. This undermines public health initiatives to get people to stop smoking and tax regulations.
To tackle this we held an initial meeting with relevant stakeholders from across the capital – such as the police, HMRC and trading standards teams – to develop a plan for working together to stamp out illegal cigarettes in our city.
