Consulting the Capital

Healthcare for London ran the biggest healthcare consultation ever conducted in the capital. Consulting the Capital ran from November 2007 to March 2008 and received over 5,000 responses from individuals and organisations, including a huge number of responses from traditionally under-represented groups.

The consultation responses helped to decide which elements of A Framework for Action to progress, and a range of projects were set up to take the work forward.

A specific consultation on improving London’s stroke and major trauma services was carried out in early 2009. The consultation ended on 8 May 2009. This led to changes to stroke and major trauma services which are already saving hundreds of lives in London.

Following changes set out in the government white paper Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS and the subsequent Health and Social Care Bill, elements of the Healthcare for London strategy have been discontinued. However a number of programmes which have evolved as part of Healthcare for London are ongoing. These were initially based within NHS Commissioning Support for London (CSL) and have continued following the closure of CSL within London Health Programmes. Patient and clinical involvement – and public consultation where required – remain central to our approach of proposing and supporting the implementation of changes to health services in the capital.
