Richard Barnes, London’s Deputy Mayor, presented certificates to 28 NHS organisations today to recognise their efforts to promote cycling. The certificate presentation at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust marks the completion of the second stage of the London NHS cycling strategy.
The strategy, managed by the London NHS Travel Network, aims to remove the barriers to cycling in London and promote cycling amongst NHS staff and the wider community. Since the strategy’s launch in 2009, NHS staff have been encouraged to increase their health and fitness while reducing carbon emissions through sustainable travel.
Recipients of today’s certificates have successfully completed the first stage of the cycling strategy as well as a number of initiatives that make up the second stage of the strategy. These initiatives include:
The Deputy Mayor of London, Richard Barnes said: “It’s been a pleasure to see so many of our NHS organisations working to keep Londoners healthy through the implementation of the cycling strategy. I welcome the efforts of London’s NHS to promote cycling to its own staff and to Londoners as a whole.”
Michael Wilson, London Health Programmes director, said: “I am tremendously proud of the London NHS Cycling Strategy and our role in hosting the network. The work of the network has enabled the NHS to be healthier and more sustainable.”
